"Since I live in a state that requires work samples, how would I accomplish that with this approach? It has always intrigued me, but the state requirements hold me back. I would also worry a lot about the required standardized tests."

Learning From the Master Teacher ~ Psalm 16:8, 9

Verse for the week:“I have set the LORD always before me; because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved. Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices; my flesh also will rest in hope.” Psalm 16:8, 9Thought for the WeekI have set so many things before me some days, that I have neglected to set the LORD always before me!  Therefore, my heart has not been glad, nor my flesh resting in hope.If you have found that you are in the same boat as me, let’s get out of that boat and get in the…See More

Time To Divide

Have some plants that have really grown and perhaps “overgrown” their space?Fall is a great time to divide perennial herbs and flowers.  If you have some plants that have gotten a bit too big for their “home”, dig them up and divide them into a few (or many) smaller plants.  You can move some of your divisions to a new planting area, share them with a friend, or even pot and sell them!  If you're dividing an herb like chives, put a little division in a pot and bring it indoors to a sunny…See More

Homeschooling is Life! ~ Bittersweet

It's a bittersweet kind of day.How is it that there is always just a little bit of bitter in some things that have been so sweet? It is officially Fall, and for me, that is bittersweet.  I prefer the Spring and Summer, with shoots piercing the soil, and buds and bugs appearing…..bouquets of flowers and kids frolicking in the grass.  Sure it gets hot, it gets rainy, it gets muddy…but we enjoy it all the same.  We have enjoyed being more aware of the growing season this year, since we have worked…See More

The Busy Woman ~ Time is More Precious Than Gold

Everyone is looking for a good deal this holiday season, or they are shopping on the expensive side because they tell me they are worth it. Know matter which side of this topic you're on, don't wait until the last minute to shop.  I already have my gifts lined up because as usual, I want to enjoy the holidays and not worry about leaving someone out this season.(No I didn't forget anyone last year.  But I heard from those who did and rushing last minute orders was difficult.)Do you have your…See More

Basting the Quilt

Hand BastingThis method is the “safest” one. It leaves no discernable holes and is certainly the cheapest method! It doesn’t work well for machine quilting, because the threads get caught on the machine feet.  Lay the backing face down on a hard surface. No carpet, fabrics, or valuable tables that will show needle scratches! It’s best if the entire piece can lay flat, but if you are working on a table and part of the quilt drapes over the edge, just work carefully. Get the backing absolutely…See More

Types of Quilting Designs and How to Mark Them

Overall or Background Quilting Grids, Diamonds, and Channels  These either cover the entire quilt or are planned to make the background recede and emphasize surface design. Lines can be marked with rulers or templates. You can also use masking tape. If you use regular masking tape, it needs to be made “gentle”: stick it to something first then peel it off to remove some off the stickiness.  You can buy painters masking tape at the hardware store – it is designed to avoid pulling paint off the…See More

Preserving Corn

Posted on October 4, 2013 at 9:00am 0 Comments

Over the years, we have always dedicated a large portion of our garden plot to corn.  Therefore, I have tried many different ways to preserve this sweet, succulent vegetable.  One of the easiest methods is to freeze the corn, husk and all, right off  the stalk.  I have heard the old-timers around here swear by this  method.  You just throw the ears with the husk still intact into freezer  bags and throw them in the freezer!  I tried this and, yes, it was easy,  but the corn had a “husky”…

Homeschooling is Life! ~ Redeeming the Time

Depending upon your State's requirements for homeschooling, you more than likely are given a minimum number of “hours” to spend with your “student.”  When you are an unschooling parent, or practice a free style of home education, then you might be worried about how to comply with that requirement.  Not eveyone does formal schoolish lessons, but everyone DOES teach their children, whether it is a planned activity or spontaneous one!…
